Weed lecture Flashcards
The Cannabis Genus
Cannabis is a genus within the family Cannabaceae
The family also contains the genus Humulus, or hops
Cannabis is _____________ meaning it has distinct male and female parts
dioecious
Both male and female plants are required in dioecious species in order for their to be offspring and in order for their to be seeds and for plants to propagate
Male have staminate flowers and female have pistillate flowers on two different sexes of plant
Cannabis has hermaphroditic meaning one plant can have both boy flowers and girl flowers and therefore they are autopollinating and a lot easier to propagate and make more of
Cannabis has highly varied secondary metabolite compostion so things these plants produce because they can not run away. These provide things beyond basic nutrition. Secondary metabolites can have toxic chemicals naturally produced in them to protect them from being eaten by animals. Secondary metabolites can be used in cancer treatment and drugs can be synthesized from secondary metabolites
Primary metabolites are the things we think of like contributions to general nutrition so whether they are sugars or carbohydrates, proteins, things that are essential for any sort of living organism to take in so they can survive and keep their metabolic processes going
Cannabis has 3 main species:
Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, Cannabis ruderalis
_______________:most naturally psychoactive cannabis species
Cannabis sativa
Cannabis sativa has HIGH THC and low concentrations of CBD
Cannabis sativa creates a “_______” energizes and reduce anxiety
mind high
Cannabis sativa is the largest of the cannabis species and it grow up to 12 feet tall
Cannabis sativa
Most commonly cultivated for hemp and ____________ use
recreational use
Cannabis sativa
Multiple uses depending on strain
- Recreation (smoking, etc.)
- Food
- Seed oil (hemp oil, wood varnish)
- Religious or spiritual significance
- Industrial fiber (hemp)
Cannabis ___________
VERY low THC content, low CBD too
ruderalis
Lets say I’m a hemp farmer however hemp has to be selectively bred to have a low THC content or else it becomes illegal to grow at least illegal to grow in that quantity because your going to have whole fields of this hemp. If we want farmer to have lower THC levels in his cannabis sativa plants that he’s trying to grow we cross bred cannabis sativa with cannabis ruderalis and the offspring because cannabis ruderalis THC is soooo low versus high THC content of cannabis sativa the offspring is going to be somewhere in the middle and through generation after generation create the perfect hybrid plant with the exact dosing concentrations ratio that your looking for
Cannabis ruderalis can grow in really harsh climates which we is great because its hardier in colder conditions….kind has like an antifreeze if u will
Cannabis ruderalis
Rarely grown for medicinal or recreational use
Cross-bred with C. sativa and C. indica to create hybrids
with desirable phenotypes and phytochemical profiles
- Faster growing
- Self-pollination and auto-flowering
- Increasing or decreasing CBD content of hybrid
medicinal strains for anxiety or epilepsy
___________: has higher CBD content and a lower THC content
cannabis indica
Cannabis indica has the inverse phytochemical profiling to cannabis sativa.
Cannabis indica has high CBD and low THC.
Cannabis sativa has high THC and low CBD
Because of high CBD contents within cannabis indica users usually experience relaxing effects, _______ relief, decreases nausea, increases _________
pain relief
appetite
