Q

Stome is the red dot you see in the images on the slide and this is an opening created by the surgeon and they turn the abdominal wall out so that area will always look red and that’s healthy because it is the lining being turned out and that’s a rich capillary thread that’s also part of the mucus membrane so it will be wet so that’s a healthy stoma

Best thing you can do is be educated, be approachable, and empathetic

Q

Another example of a ostomy; it has more of a pressure when the pouch gets full and it creates a seal so there isn’t any leakage or slippage

Q

When someone has a stoma they not only need an adhesive to go around the area so that the bag can then stay on for them; there’s an odor reducer that people can buy; and there’s an adhesive remover because the skin can definitely get irritated after a while because this is a constant (putting the adhesive on and removing the adhesive)

Q

___________ correct uneven foot pressures and people who may pronate one way or the other so if a pt’s feet turn in or out that can cause not just foot pain..When your feet are not aligned then spinal alignment issues or knee pain or hip pain all of those things can happen with the feet not being aligned

A

Q

You can have a whole orthotic and you can have half of one and you can have a heel cup that can be useful for a heel spur so a bone spur in the heel and it will take some of the pressure off and that area may be healed but it would definitely would reduce the pain for the patient so it can correct some orthotics

Q

Abdominal Supports and Rib belts are going to provide a lot of support and they are also going to serve as a reminder when they are bending or lifting so they are keeping themselves in alignment and that serves as a reminder for them to be careful with how they are moving their body. You can use it for back pain now if pt is having significant back pain are you ready to diagnosis their back pain and give them a brace? NO! depending on what the condition is

Q

The theory is to splint at night because splinting it during the day and going about your normal activities holds your wrist in an uncompromising way and in an unnatural way that when your doing your normal activities its actually increasing the pain sometimes. Wearing splint at night is favorable

Q

You see that transverse carpal ligament When someone goes in for surgery to release that pressure…healing is very quick and not painful..the doctor just cuts the ligament and releases the pressure on that median nerve and then they are without pain

Q

Slings,canes, and crutches are adjustable

A
17
Q

This is a good fit for a sling, elbow is at ________ degree angle and its close to the body

A

90 degree angle

18
Q

Braces to provide support while area heals; Neoprene gives sense of warmth and that compression its not necessarily superior but feels like that area has support

A
19
Q

Pt was told to pick up cervical collar; its not a significant thing where pt needs giant neck brace that has to be personally fit for him he needs one pharmacy type

A
20
Q

If we had a small female this one size fits all its kinda of big. May have to order a child size for a small female or small elderly person…these cervical collars are washable and there is also a sleeve to go over them if someone needs it long term and they should buy 2 so one can be washed and one can be worn

A
21
Q

It’s important to go by size and we want pt to comfortable because if its not comfortable pt might not use it. Use a tape measure in your pharmacy so you can help them with wrist braces or knee braces

A
22
Q

Soft cervical collars come in different sizes and have pt try it in and use this after a CAR ACCIDENT!

A

Q

Compression socks used for ____________ and poor circulation. Used for people who stand on their ___________ all the time; used for people who travel long distances on a airplane; people who complain of tired and achy legs can also try compression socks. Pharmacists, nurses, chefs wear compression socks because they are on their feet all the time. They go by size, so shoe size and calf size…compression will also go by millimeters of mercury and that’s the pressure.. (ex: you will see 20 to 30mm of pressure that’s its going to supply and that is a lot of pressure. Your usually helping somebody w/ 15 to 20 for the pressure needed

A

varicose veins

feet

24
Q

Because some compression socks have a lot of compression these are VERY HARD TO GET ON…TIPS: roll them up, put them on before you get out of bed; before you put a foot on the ground you want to have them rolled and roll them up if possible

A
25
Q

Compression is helping to increase blood flow and increase circulation. When you start to get varicose veins and people wear compression socks to prevent this from happening

A
26
Q

Normal vein…___________valve and you see returned blood flow

A

closed valve

27
Q

With self diagnosis we are trying to do ______ to ________mm of mercury for pressure

A

15 to 20

28
Q

With varicose vein valve starts to become ________, you see bulging, spider veins can happen

A

open

29
Q

With self diagnosis we are trying to do 15 to 20mm of mercury for pressure

A
30
Q

If situation looks severe or theres an open wound on the leg its important for pt to see provider first

A
31
Q

If pt is traveling or standing on feet on their feet all the time then I would give compression stockings of 10 to 15 or 12 or 8

A
32
Q

Compression stock…most compression is around the lower part of the leg specifically ankle…its helping to exert that pressure on the veins to pump the blood and not have it pool…risk of blood accumulation? When someone is flying…risk of blood clots or____________ so wearing those compression socks are helpful…if they are able to get up and walk around the plane or stretch and use their legs in their seat…if someone has fluid retention you might see that swelling in that bottom part of the leg and so dietary salt intake can affect that, ______ failure, kidney disease

A

deep vein thrombosis risk of blood accumulation

heart failure
