Weathering processes In The UK landscape Flashcards
How is weathering different to erosion?
Erosion actually moves the sediment weathering left behind
What is weathering?
The breakdown of solid rock by the action of weather or plants
What are the three types of weathering?
Physical, chemical and biological
What is an example of physical weathering?
Freeze thaw
Give an example of chemical weathering
Acid rain dissolving limestone
Give an example of biological weathering
Plants getting into rock cracks and breaking them
What is chemical weathering?
When water reacts with calcium carbonate in rocks which dissolved and gets washed away in solution, weakening the rock
What is biological weathering?
When animals or plant roots burrow into cracks in a rock, weakening it until the rock splits
What is physical weathering?
When physical force is used to break a rock apart like in freeze thaw when water gets trapped in a crack, freezes and expands causing the rock to crack
What can freeze thaw weathering cause?
Rock falls
