1 The Lake District - an upland landscape Flashcards
What kind of valleys did glaciers create?
Deep U shaped valleys now filled by lakes
What are misfits?
The small rivers that flow through U valleys instead of glaciers
What do misfits deposit that make the valley bottom what?
Silt and mud known as alluvium that make the valley bottom fertile for farming
What makes the ground rough?
Rock fragments called scree
What does scree consist of and how was it created?
Angular rock pieces created by freeze - thaw weathering
By what percentage does rainwater expand when frozen in freeze thaw weathering?
10%
What two rapid slope processes affect valley sides?
Rockfalls and landslides
What are rockfalls?
When scree fragments move easily
What are landslides?
When rain adds to the weight of weathered rock causing it to slide easily
What is slower in the Lake District and which type is most common?
Slope processes, most common being soil creep.
