Weather radar(WXR) Flashcards

1
Q

This radar is pretty advanced. Explain Ground Clutter Suppression(GCS) function!!

A

GCS uses terrain database information to evaluate returns at different angles. The WXR returns, below a predetermined threshold level, are eliminated to remove ground clutter from the weather displays.

*the WXR removes unnecessary returns and available in Auto Mode only

Q

Explain the overflight protection function on the WXR!!

A

When the aircraft is approx 15nm from the storm cells, the overflight protection function uses the latest radar scans from the WXR memory to display the significant weather, until behind the aircraft.

Q

Explain the Path Attenuation Compensation function(PAC)!!

A

Corrects for radar beam absorption as it penetrates precipitation, up to 80nm ahead of aircraft.

*available in Auto Mode only.

Q

Explain the difference between Oceanic weather cells compared to Continental.

A

Oceanic weather cells tend to have less mass and reflectivity than continental cells of equivalent height.

Q

With the difference in Oceanic and Continental, in Auto Mode, what does the WXR automatically do?

A

Automatically adjusts gain and tilt in Oceanic regions to more accurately depict weather cells.
