weather - borneo Flashcards
why is deforestation happening in borneo?
80% of palm oil comes form there
- largest exporter of palm oil
- boost economy in Asia
- road building
- logging
- mining
how much has the orangutang population declined?
50% in the last 20 years
how much of the rainforest in borneo is left?
45%
what are the impacts of deforestation?
monoculture forests loss of habitats and food source for animals reduction in biodiversity reduction in trees = more flooding more forest fires haze, from burning palm plantations
why are there more forest fires/
loss of trees and also the burning of palm trees at a mass scale
why is there more flooding?
loss of trees absorbing water, one type of tree etc
what are the layers of the rainforest?
emergent
canopy
under canopy
forest floor
what are adaptations to plants in the rainforest?
- leaves have a drip tip to cope with high rainfall
-
why is the climate benefiting plants?
hot temperatures all year creates evergreen plants
humid and wet environment lets plants thrive
high biodiversity
leaves absorb light through the big leaves (forest floor plants)
drip tip leaves
why is there a tropical rainforest climate?
Hadley cells convectional rain sits above the equator sun rays hit the equator directly high intensity sunrays lots of condensation = humidity
how does the Hadley cell work?
intense sun causes the air to rise which creates a low-pressure zone
as it rises to cools and forms thick storm clouds and then
- air separates and moves both north and south
- the air then cools and sinks to the ground
- forms a high pressure zone
- it sinks and becomes warmer and drier creating desert climate
- completed cycle and flows back toward the equator as trade winds
what is conventional rainfall, how does it work?
rain pattern
- convectional rainfall usually occurs during the summer when the sun heats the land
- creates rising pocket of warm air (convection currents)
- warm air rises and starts to cool and condenses to form clouds
- clouds produce heavy rainfall and thunderstorms
what are factors affecting climate
- latitude
- altitude
- relief
- prevailing winds
- ocean currents
- distance from the sea
