POPULATION density and distribution, canada + north america Flashcards
distribution and therefore population density of USA
- uneven - b/c different climate, job opportunities, trade, coast, tourist market
- more densely populated in east and west coast
- sparsely populated in middle
why is climate one of the reasons canada has low population density and uneven distribution?
climate, winter temp gets below -20, summer months are short
- b/c of weather very hard to grow crops
is canada isolated, if yes what are the impacts they face?
- very very isolated b/c ice makes it hard to build roads, etc
- Canada is so big and some land is hard to live and build on
- there is also permafrost in the north
what happens to permafrost in the summer?
in summer top melts which makes it marshy; not ideal to live/build on
how much of the ground is affected by permafrost?
300m in some places
- as you go further north it gets worse
why does the west coast (USA) have a high population density?
- West coast (LA, San Fran) - Good Weather, attractive place to live; coastline; trade, job opportunities.
why does the east coast (USA) have a high population density?
- East coast (New York, Florida) - job opportunities, tourist
why does the middle of the USA have a low population density?
- Middle (Utah) - desert; hot weather; dry, mountains (hard to build/live on)
why is the south of Canada quite densely populated?
- close to USA border
- better weather, less harsh in winters etc
- can import things bc of US
