  • dense american plate forced into mantle causes rock to melt
  • molten rock is lighter than the other rock, so it rises into cracks
  • strato-volcanoes produce sticky andesitic lava (thick lava)
  • thick lava created dome on side of chances peal
  • dome collapsed in 1997, lead to ash fall and pyroclastic flow
