TECTONICS - montserrat volcano Flashcards
what is the Monserrat plate boundary type?
on a destructive (convergent) plate boundary
on the plate boundary, what do the convection currents do?
pull the American plate boundary toward the Caribbean plate boundary
how did the Monserrat volcano eurrupt?
- dense american plate forced into mantle causes rock to melt
- molten rock is lighter than the other rock, so it rises into cracks
- strato-volcanoes produce sticky andesitic lava (thick lava)
- thick lava created dome on side of chances peal
- dome collapsed in 1997, lead to ash fall and pyroclastic flow
what happened to the landscape?
changed dramatically
what happened to animal habitats?
they were destroyed (esp mountain chicken frogs)
what happened to animals when they couldn’t find food (after volcano)
went feral bc they ate frogs and stuff that gave them weird diseases.
what happened to coral reefs?
covered in ash and debris
what gas was released and what was the impact?
sulphur dioxide which leads to acid rain, which impact vegetation growth
what happened to the economy?
damaged, farmland family business all gone
what happened to plymouth?
the main town and all its businesses were ruined
what were the impacts of less housing?
more homeless and then more below poverty line
what did people do after the volcano for housing?
stayed in shelters
how did they predict the volcano?
- gas sampling
- GPS tech
- seismic monitoring
- geologists
what did they do for prevention?
- clear ash from roofs to prevent collapsing
- people not allowed to live in risky areas
why live near an earthquake?
- fertile land for farming
- volcanic activity is always monitored
- lots of jobs
- nice landscapes
- tourism
