What does AIM stand for?
(Air launched) Air Intercept Missile
Describe the AIM-9M Sidewinder
A supersonic air-to-air weapon, it has passive infrared target detection, proportional navigation guidance, and torque balanced control systems.
The missile is 9.5’ long, 5” in diameter, weighs 190 lbs and steers to the target by fins located on the guidance section.
Guidance: Passive Infrared
Describe the AIM-9X Sidewinder
9X is an improvement to the 9M

The missile is 9.5’ long, 5” in diameter, weighs 188 lbs and steers to the target by control fins and paddles located in the exhaust stream allowing for directional thrust control
Guidance: Passive Infrared
Describe the AIM-7 Sparrow
A supersonic air-to-air guided missile, it is designed to be “ejection” or “rail” launched from an interceptor aircraft.
The tactical mission of the missile is to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft in all weather environments.
The missile is 12’ long, 8” in diameter, and weighs 510 lbs and is controlled by fins located in the mid section.
Guidance: Semi-active radar
