Radar Types Flashcards
Instrument landing systems
Describe the AN/SPN-41. ILS (Instrument Landing System) or “Bullseye”
A completely independent guidance/navigation system used for instrument approaches to the ship. This type of approach requires the pilot to transfer control to a visual landing aid prior to touchdown.
Describe the AN/SPN-46. ACLS (Automatic Carrier Landing System)- “Easy Rider”
Enables the pilot to perform instrument approaches to the ship under either manual (MODE 3) or automatic control (MODE1). The system consists of a precision tracking radar coupled to a computer and data link that provides continuous azimuth and elevation information, or “Needles”, to aircraft and shipboard controllers.
What are the three modes of “Easy Rider”?
Mode 1 - Hands off
Mode 2 - pilots are given assistance using “Needles”
Mode 3 - complete completely manual use radio communication
