Water Flow Through Plants Flashcards
What do Phloem Tubes transport?
Food
What is the structure of Phloem tubes?
Made of columns of living cells with small holes in the ends to allow stuff to flow through
What is the main food substance that phloem transports?
Dissolved sugars
Where is the food, in plants, made? Where is it transported to?
Made in the leaves
Transported to growing regions (new shoots) and storage organs (root tubers) of the plant
Does transport, through phloem tubes, go one way (up or down?) or both ways?
Both ways
What do Xylem vessels transport?
Water and minerals
What is the structure of Xylem vessels?
Made of dead cells joined end t end with NO end walls between them and a hole down the middle.
Where does the water and minerals come from in the plant, where is it transported to?
Water and minerals from the roots to the stem and leaves in the transpiration stream.
What is transpiration?
The loss of water from a plant
What is transpiration caused by?
Evaporation and diffusion of water from inside the leaves
Why is water brought up from the roots to the leaves through the xylem vessels?
A shortage of water is created in the leaves when the water is lost. This water needs to be replaced.
What is the transpiration stream?
The flow of water from the roots to replenish the water lost in the leaves.
Why does water leave through stomata?
There is more water in the leaf than outside the leaf therefore the water diffuses out.
