The Breathing System Flashcards
You need to get oxygen into your bloodstream so that it can get to your [ ] for [ ]
Cells
Respiration
What do you need to get rid of from your blood, through your lungs?
CO2
What is the thorax?
The upper part of your body
What separates the thorax from the abdomen?
The diaphragm
What are the lungs protected by?
The ribcage
What is the texture, colour and size of the lungs?
Big, pink sponges
What does the air go through when you breathe in? Then the…?
Through the Trachea then the Bronchi
What do the Bronchi split off into?
Progressively smaller tubes called Bronchioles
What is at the end of the Bronchioles? What happens here?
Alveoli
Gas exchange
What is ventilation?
The movement of air into and out of the lungs
What happens when you breathe in? (3)
1) Intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract
2) Thorax volume increases
3) This decreases pressure, drawing air in
What happens when you breathe out? (3)
1) Intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax
2) Thorax volume decreases
3) This increases pressure, so air is forced out
What do artificial ventilators do?
They help people who can’t breathe for themselves (under general anaesthetic, lung injury or disease etc.). They move air in and out of the lungs.
How do Iron lungs work?
Air is pumped out of the case, pressure drops, the lungs expand and so air is drawn into the lungs. Air pumped into the case had the opposite effect, forcing air out of the lungs.
What is a medical issue with iron lungs?
They can interfere with blood flow to the lower body
