The Circulatory System - The Heart Flashcards
What is the function of the circulatory system?
To get food and oxygen to every cell in the body and to carry waste products (CO2 and Urea) to where they can be removed from the body
Humans have a [ ] circulatory system
Double
One circulatory system pumps [ ] blood to the lungs to take in [ ]. The blood then returns to the [ ]
deoxygenated
oxygen
heart.
The second circulatory system pumps [ ] blood around all other organs. The blood releases its oxygen to the [ ] and the [ ] returns to the heart to be pumped out to the [ ] again.

The heart [ ] to pump blood around the body
Contracts
What are the walls of the heart made of?
Muscle tissue
What do heart valves do?
They make sure that blood goes in the right direction - they prevent it flowing backwards
1) Blood flows into the 2 [ ] from the vena cava and the [ ]
atria
pulmonary vein
2) The atria [ ], pushing blood into the [ ]
contract
ventricles
3) The [ ] contract forcing the blood into the pulmonary artery and the [ ], and out of the heart
ventricles
aorta
4) The blood then flows to the organs through [ ], and returns through [ ]
arteries
veins
5) The [ ] fill again and the whole cycle starts over
atria
What is the order of the places blood goes in the circulatory system?
Vena Cava and Pulmonary Vein ->Atria -> Ventricles -> Pulmonary Artery and Aorta -> Arteries -> Veins -> Atria
