Carbon Dioxide and the Greenhouse Effect Flashcards
How is carbon present in the atmosphere?
As carbon dioxide (CO2)
Many processes lead to CO2 being released (eg, [ ])
burning fossil fuels
Too much CO2 in the atmosphere causes…
Global warming
CO2 can be [ ] (locked up) in natural [ ].
sequestered
stores
Why is storing CO2 important?
It means that CO2 is removed from the atmosphere
What are the carbon natural stores?
Oceans, lakes and ponds
Green plants where it’s stored as carbon compounds - Green plants remove CO2 from the atmosphere during photosynthesis
Peat bogs
What do carbon dioxide and methane do?
Trap heat from the sun. They are greenhouse gases and the levels of these 2 gases are rising quickly
Describe the temp. on earth (balance)
Balance between the heat it gets from the Sun and the heat it radiates back out into space
Gases in the atmosphere naturally act like an [ ]. They [ ] most of the heat that would normally be [ ] out into space, and re-radiated in all [ ].

What is global warming? what does it cause?
The earth is gradually heating up because of the increasing levels of greenhouse gases = global warming. Global warming is a type of climate change and causes other types of climate change, eg. changing rainfall patterns
