Water distribution and stores3.1.1.2 Flashcards
Earths 5 subsystems
Lithosphere Cryosurgery Atmosphere Biosphere Hydrosphere
Global distribution of water
97% is ocean
3 % is freshwater
Of 3% - 79% is locked in ice caps & glaciers
Of 3% - 1% accessible surface water
Of 3% - 20% is groundwater
0.4 % of all water is in atmosphere
Oceanic water
Covers 72% of earths surface
Salty so can stay liquid below 0
pH around 8.14 fallen from 8.25 in 250 years due to increased CO2
5 types of cryospheric water and examples
Sea ice - Ross ice shelf
Ice caps - Iceland ice cap
Ice sheets - Greenland ice sheet
Alpine glaciers - Mer de Glacé, France
Permafrost - Alaska north slope
What is sea ice
When ocean water cooled to below freezing, doesn’t cause sea rise when melts as made of same water. Only when it pushes water
What are ice sheets
Antarctica and Greenland. Ice sheets on land
What are alpine glaciers
Thick masses of ice on deep valleys
What is permafrost
Found that remains below 0 for 2 consecutive years.
Can contain soil and organic materials so when it melts releases CO2 and methane - affecting climate
What are the types of terrestrial water and what are they
Surface - free flowing river or lakes
Ground - water collected underground i pore spaces of rock
Soil - water held together with air in saturated layers of soil
Biological - water stores in all biomass
Atmospheric water
Exists in all 3 states
Absorbs, reflects and scatters incoming solar radiation
Amount jheld in air sends on temperature - cold air can’t hold as much
