Water and Lipid soluble hormones Flashcards
1
Q
Describe a lipid soluble hormones
A
They are hydrophobic They use a transport protein There receptors are located inside the cell It is a direct action Examples include T3 and T4
2
Q
Describe the process of a lipid soluble hormones
A
- Diffuses from the blood stream into the cell
- Activates the receptor hormone
- Forms new mRNa
- Directs synthesis of specific protein
- New protein alter the cells activity
3
Q
Describe a water-soluble hormone
A
Is hydrophobic Transports freely in blood Receptor is located at plasma membrane Is an indirect process (second messenger) Examples include serotonin and melatonin
4
Q
Describe the process of a water soluble hormone
A
Binds hormone (first messenger) activates G protein
Activates adenylate cyclase
Activated adenylate cyclase converts ATP to cAMP
cAMP second messenger activates protein kinases (enzymes that modify other proteins)
Protein kinases phosphorylate cellular proteins
Millions cause reactions cause physiological response
