Types of neuroglia Flashcards
Define the neuroglia of the CNS
Astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia and ependymal cells
Define the neuroglia of the PNS
Satellite cells and Schwann cells
Define astrocytes
Star shaped cell
Largest and most numerous of the neuroglia
Provides strength
Isolate neurons from CNS from harmful substances in blood
Learning and memory
Define oligodendrocytes
Forms and maintains myelin sheath around axons
Insulates axons and increases the speed of nerve impulses and conduction
Define Microglia
Slender and give off numerous spinelike projections
Act as phagocytes (ingest and sometimes digest foreign particles)
Removes cellular debris of nervous system
Define ependymal cells
Cuboidal to columnar cells arranged in a single layer that posses microvilli and cilia
Lines the ventricles of the brain and central canal of spinal cord
Produce, monitor and assist in circulation of cerebrospinal fluid
Define Schwann cells
Encircle PNS axons
Form myelin sheath around axons
Each Schwann cell myelinates a single axon
Participate in axon regeneration
Define Satellite Cells
Flat cells that surround the cell bodies of neurons
Structural support
Regulates the exchange of materials between neuronal cells bodies and interstitial fluid
