Synovial Joints Flashcards
What is a synovial joint
Where two bones meet
Capable of large range of movement
Lined with hyaline cartilage
Enclosed capsule containing synovial fluid
Define Biaxial, multiaxial and uniaxial
Uniaxial - moves on one axis
Biaxial - Moves along 2 axis
Multiaxial - Moves along 3 or more axis’s
Define Plane joints
Glide movement
Flat surface
Non-axial - no rotation occurs
Example is the intercarpal joints
Define pivot joints
Pivoting movement
Rounded main point where rotation occurs
Uniaxial
V1 rotates around V2 bulb (shaking head no) (Atlanto axial)
Radioulnar joint
Define hinge joints
Similar to a hinge of a door Uniaxial Permit flexion and extension Elbow Ankle - talocruel joint
Define condyloid joint
Circular motion Upwards saddle joint Flexion and extension Abduction and adduction Knuckles Wrist
Define saddle joint
Looks like a saddle Flexion and extension Abduction and adduction Biaxial 1st carpometacarpal joint
Define ball and socket
Multiaxial Flexion and extension Abduction and adduction Internal and external rotation Circumduction Shoulder Hip joint
Define abduction and adduction
Abduction is moving away
Adduction is coming inwards
