Describe sesamoid bones
Shaped like a sesame seed
Areas of considerable tension and physical stress
Protects against wear and tear
Examples include kneecaps and large bones in the quadriceps femoris tendon
Describe irregular bones (example)
Complex shapes and cannot be grouped
Vary from spongy to compact bone
Includes vertebrae, hip bones, facial bones and calcaneus (heel bone)
Describe flat bones (example)
Generally think and composed of two nearly parallel plates of compact bone tissue enclosed in a layer of spongey tissue
Protection and area for muscle attachment
Examples of cranial, sternum, ribs and scapulae
Describe short bones
Somewhat cube shaped, consist of spongey bone
Example of most carpal and tarsal bones
Describe long bones with examples
Greater length then width, used for strength, made of compact tissue bone, spongey bone tissue in epiphyses
Found in the femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, ulna, radius and phalanges
