water and dietary fibre Flashcards
1
Q
Water:
What are the factors affecting water intake (4) + examples
A
- State of health: Fever, vomiting & diarrhea causes large amount of water to be lost.
- Diet: Diet high in DIURETICS (coffee) increases rate of water loss due to frequent urination.
- Environment: Hot environment = body loses more water through perspiration to regulate body temp.
- Level of physical activity: body produces heat while doing strenuous activities = increases water loss to regulate body temp.
Eg. Water, soups, milk, celery, apple, watermelon

Q
Functions of water in body (5)
A
- Regulate body temp thru perspiration
- Important for chemical reactions (dissolving water soluble vitamins)
- Transport nutrients & gases (blood consist of mostly water)
- Remove waste from body. Blood dissolves CO2 and also removes it frm diff parts of the body.
- Lubrication. Fluids in body are made up of water and these fluids acts as lubricants in diff parts of body to reduce friction between joints.

Q
Dietary fibre:
what are the foods that provide dietary fibre
A
Apples, Celery, Chia seeds, Banana, Broad beans
4
Q
Function of dietary fibre (4)
A
- Lowers blood cholesterol levels. Fibre bond with cholesterol and excrete frm body.
- Increase satiety. Fibre stays in stomach longer as it is harder to digest and makes us feel full. Prevents obesity as well as it delays hunger.
- Slow down glucose absorption. Delays digestion of nutrients in digestive track.
- Removes wastes. Dietary fibre attracts water which forms bulky and soft stools to prevent constipation.
5
Q
Foods that aren’t recommended to consume and why
A
- Alcohol and caffeinated. Contains diuretic ability that increases rate of water loss from body through urinating.
- Salty soups. Leads to further thirst as more water is needed to excrete sodium via urination.
- Sweetened drinks. Causes obesity.
