Water Flashcards
Name 5 features of water?
Metabolite Solvent Heat capacity of water Latent Heat of Vaporisation Cohesion
Explain how water is a solvent
Water is a Polar molecule due to the partial negative charge on Oxygen and partial positive on Hydrogen.Polar molecules and ionic compounds will form interactions with water molecules and dissolve
Explain how water is a metabolite
It is used in chemical reactions. Hydrolysis and condensation involve water molecules. Water is a product respiration and a substrate in photosynthesis
Explain how water is involved in Cohesion
Water molecules stick to each other by cohesion. Hydrogen bonds form between water molecules. In the xylem vessel, cohesion allows thin columns of water to be pulled up towards leaves for transpiration. When water meets air, water molecules on surface are more strongly attracted to each other due to Surface Tension
What is the difference between Cohesion and Adhesion?
Cohesion is the attraction between water molecules and adhesion is the attraction between water molecules and other substances
Explain the feature of Latent Heat of Vaporisation
Energy is required to turn water into water vapour. Water has a high latent heat of vaporisation so requires a lot of energy for a little amount of water so there is little loss of water through evaporation due to the many hydrogen bonds needed to be broken.
Explain the feature of the heat capacity of water
Water has a high heat capacity of water - it doesn’t readily change temp as there a lot of hydrogen bonds which provide a stable environment for aquatic organism
Outline other features of water
Ice is less dense than water sp will act as an insulating layer. Water is transparent so plants beneath surface can photosynthesise.
