Water Flashcards
What bonds are water molecules held together by?
Hydrogen bonds
How do hydrogen bonds work
In covalent bonds electrons will spend more time closer to one atom than another. This means one atom will slightly be negatively charged. The positive and negative regions attract each other. In water oxygen is negatively charged and hydrogen positively charged.
Hydrogen bonds properties
Are weak but occur in high numbers
Properties of water
- ice is less dense than water
- water is a good solvent
- has a high specific heat capacity
- cohesion
- surface tension
- adhesive
- transparent
What is Cohesion
Attraction between tow water molecules are strong because they are polar.
What is adhesion
Adhesion is when water is attracted to a surface
what makes water a Solvent
Water is polar meaning the positive end of water will be attracted to the negative ion and negative end of water to positive ions. This means water molecule surround the ions dissolving it.
how does having high specific heat capacity a good property
A lot of energy is needed to break bonds. An example is sweating
