Water Flashcards
What is a metabolic reaction
A condensation or hydrolysis reaction that happens in a living organism to keep the organism alive
What is a metabolite
A substance involved with a metabolic reaction
What does solvent mean
Substances dissolve into it
What properties does water have
- metabolite
- solvent
- high latent heat of vaporisation
- high specific heat capacity
- cohesive
What does cohesive mean
When molecules stick together
What is a hydrogen bond
A bond between a hydrogen atom and a different molecule such as another oxygen atom in a water molecule
What does a high latent heat of vaporisation mean
It takes alot of energy (heat) to break the hydrogen bonds which makes it so that living organisms can lose water loss through evaporation to cool down (sweating)
What does high specific heat capacity mean
The hydrogen bonds can absorb a lot of energy, takes a lot of energy to heat water up, makes water a good habitat because stable temperature
What does polar mean
One end of the molecule is positive and one end is negative
What does high surface tension mean
Significant resistance to penetration compared to the rest of the liquid allowing pond skaters to ‘walk’ on the surface of a pond
