Lipids Flashcards
What is a triglyceride
One glycerol and three fatty acids
Fatty acids are hydrophobic. What does hydrophobic mean
Fatty acids repels water
What does saturated mean
It has no double bonds
What does unsaturated mean
It contains double bonds
What is a phospholipid
A phosphate group, glycerol and 2 fatty acids
The phosphate group is hydrophilic. What does hydrophilic mean
The phosphate group attracts water
How are triglycerides formed
A condensation reaction between a glycerol molecule and three fatty acids
What bond is formed with a condensation reaction between a glycerol and three molecules of a fatty acid
Ester bond
What are triglycerides used for
Energy storage molecules
What are phospolipids used for
Bilayer of cell membranes
How do you test for lipids
- add ethanol
- shake for 1 minute
- pour in water
- if milky emulsion is observed, lipids are present
