Q

what is it mean to be polar? explain using water as an example.

A
  • unequal sharing of e- between atoms.
  • in water’s case, the oxygen atom has a slight - charge, it pulls the slightly + hydrogens towards it
  • the polar covalent bond is between the hydrogen and oxygen molecule(s)

Q

what is polar covalent?

A
  • polar mixes with polar/anything that has a charge
  • H2O dissolves/mixes with anything polar or charged
  • something that is polar is soluble in H2O

Q

what is non polar covalent?

A
  • equal sharing of e-
  • non-polar mixes with non-polar
  • cannot mix or dissolve in water
  • insoluble in water
  • ex. H2, Cl2
