Water Flashcards
How do hydrogen molecules form between water molecules ?
Water is polar, oxygen is delta negative while hydrogen is delta positive
Intermolecular forces that start to form between one positive hydrogen molecule and one negative oxygen molecule on an adjacent molecule
7 properties ot water
High latent heat vaporisation High specific heat capacity Metabolitw/solvent High surface tension Incomprehensible Cohesion between molecules
Explain why ice is denser than water
Ice is less dense than water because h bonds are in fixed positions away from each other , this allows water to be insulated and be a habitat for aquatic animals
Why is high surface tension important
This allows less water loss due to transpiration in plants
Water rises unusually high in narrow tubes so it allows less press on the roots
Why is water an important solvent
Dissolves sbd transports charged particles in intra and extracellular reactions e.g DNA synthesis
Why is high specific heat capacity and high latent heat vaporisation important for organisms
Acts as a temperature buffer so rluctuations in core temperature doesnt affect enzyme activity
Provides a coolint effect when water evaporates from skin due to sweating
