DNA Extended Idk Flashcards
Why is dna replication said to be conservative
Strands from the original DNA acts a template.
New dna molecule contains 1 old strand and 1 new strand
What does helicase do
Breaks the h bonds between the pairs so it can now act as a new template
How is a new dna strand made
nucleotides from the nuclear sap attach to the exposed bases
DNA polymerase joins the adjacent nucleotides on a new strand 5’- 3’ direction via condensation and forming phodphodiester bonds
Genetic code
Same based + sequences used by all organisms
How does a gene determine the amino sequence
Consists of base triplets rhat are responsible for a specific code
What does transcription occur and where does it take place
Produces MRNA and takes place in the nucleus
Outline the process of transcription
RNA polymerase binds to the promoter region on a gene
Section of DNA uwinds causing free exposed nucleotides , antisense strand acts a template
Polymerase joins adjacent nucleotides to form phosphodiester bonds
Process of translation
Ribosomes move along MRNA until the start codon
TRNA attaches to complementary bases on MRNA
Condensation occurs creating peptide bonds to occur between amino acids on trna
Requires energy from trna
This continues untill a stop codon is produced
Describe how polynucletides are broken down + formed
Phosphodiester bonds form between the nucleotides via condensation reaction
Hydrolysis using addition of water then breaks these phosphodiester bonds
Structure of ATP
Structure of ADP
Atp = three inorganic groups Adp = two inorganic groups
