What were the origins of the first Lebanese war?

A
  • The Christian and Muslim country was causing tension as by the 1970s the Muslim population was bigger than the Christian one so they wanted more power
  • There were many Palestinian refugees (mostly after the 6 day war)
  • After being expelled from Jordan the PLO set up more bases and bombed Jewish settlements (when Israelis hit back Lebanese were hurt too)

A

1975 the Lebanese government wanted the army to regain the south but the Palestinians were helped by the Muslims and a civil war occurred between Christians and Muslims.

The first invasion of Lebanon

A
  • 1978
  • Three days after PLO suicide squad attacked a bus near Tel Aviv Israeli troops invaded.
  • The PLO troops melted away but they withdrew under USA pressure (UN troops are sent to keep the peace)

Second Israeli invasion

A
  • Operation Peace for Galilee
  • 1982 a group of Palestinians attempted to murder the Israeli ambassador in London which was the excuse for invading Lebanon
  • Israeli defence minister said the main aim was to protect the Israelis living in Galilee by driving out Palestinians but they advanced North to the capital
  • They had complete control of the sky

The evacuation of the PLO

A
  • The USA intervened and persuaded Israelis to stop shelling the city as the PLO fighters would be evacuated
  • Israelis still believed that there may still be 2000 Palestinian fighters in the camps.
  • When a newly elected president was killed the Christians invaded camps and massacred people (Israelis didn’t do anything and were told not to)
  • 400,000 people is Israel protested this

The Israelis withdrawal

A
  • When the PLO left they withdrew troops apart from the South.
  • Many Muslims hated them still and many became members of Hezbollah
  • When Israelis heard of the events like the 1985 suicide bombers towards Israeli soldiers they wanted to withdraw troops.
  • 1985 they withdrew most of their troops and it was the longest war they fought and many say their first defeat
