The Palestinians And PLO Flashcards
What was the difference between Jordan and other Arab states in their attitudes to Palestinians?
Jordan allowed them to become citizens whereas others stayed in refugee camps on the border
What group was created in 1949?
A group of Palestinian fighters called Fatah with the aim to create a Palestinian state
The aim of the 1964 PLO
To unite all Palestinians (the largest group within this was the Fatah)
The impact of the 6 day war on Palestinians and PLO
- Syria and Egypt became more focused on the land they lost rather than the Palestinians
- Many Palestinians thought they would have to fight for a homeland alone as countries were weakened by 6 day
Palestinians in Jordan from 1967
Half of the population of two million was Palestinian
Many groups like the Fatah and PLO concentrated forces in Jordan and recruited volunteers from refugee camps
When did Arafat become PLO leader and how did this change things
1968
He believed armed struggle was the only way forward
He wanted the radar to remain just on Israel whereas others (like PFLP) wanted to regain the country
When and why were the PLO expelled from Jordan
1970
- King Hussein feared the Israeli reprisals and he didn’t like the fact that the PLO acted like they owned Jordan
- Then 4 aircraft were hijacked by PFLP and 3 taken to Jordan where the people demanded Palestinian fighters should be released
- after this king Hussein his army took over PLO bases and the remaining fighters went to Syria and Lebanon
