Uterine Activity vs. Preterm Labor

A
  • True labor contractions are generally very low or in the back
  • Tightening in upper uterus is result of stretching
  • Normal uterine activity may be felt as early as 20 weeks or may not at all
  • Uterine activity may be associated with pre-term labor
  • Differentiation between normal uterine activity and preterm labor must be done by a care provider, normally with fetal monitoring and vaginal exam
