A
- Called the cuddle hormone
- Causes final powerful uterine contractions that enable mom to birth baby easier and quicker
- Plays role in breastfeeding

Beta-endorphin
A
- Naturally occurring opiates
- Secreted under conditions of pain and stress
- Acts to restore homeostasis
- Mom is able to tolerate pain and experiences pleasure
- Activates meso cortico limbic dopamine

A
- Assists beta-endorphin to be as powerful as a large dose of morphine

Catecholamines

- Examples are adrenalin (epinephrine), noradrenalin (norepinephrine), and cortisol
- Stress hormones secreted when humans perceive fear or are in actual danger
- Can slow labor in the first stage
- But in the second stage can provide renewed strength (fetal ejection reflex)

- Prepares breast for milk
- Calms mom and baby
