  • Naturally occurring opiates
  • Secreted under conditions of pain and stress
  • Acts to restore homeostasis
  • Mom is able to tolerate pain and experiences pleasure
  • Activates meso cortico limbic dopamine

  • Stress hormones secreted when humans perceive fear or are in actual danger
  • Can slow labor in the first stage
  • But in the second stage can provide renewed strength (fetal ejection reflex)
