Blastocyst
Multicellular structure that forms after conception
Embryo
By 2 weeks
Blastocyst has mad its way along fallopian tube and implanted in the uterine lining
Primitive placenta
Part of the fertilized egg is developing into placenta
Rootlike projections that penetrate uterine lining and acquires nutrients for developing embryo
Androgens
Male and female babies appear same until 9 weeks
Hormones produced if male that signal development of scrotum and penis
Fetus
9 weeks old
11 weeks gestational age
Chorionic Villi
At end of first month projections extend into uterine lining becoming primitive placenta
Baby’s blood circulates through chorionic villi while mom’s blood circulates into spaces surrounding them (intervillous spaces)
Membranes
Amnion and chorion
Create amniotic sac that surrounds baby
Amniotic fluid
Protects baby by absorbing bumps from outside, maintaining even temperature and providing a medium for easy movement
