To gain territory or resources
Self defence

Counter perceived threats from a different ideology
What is Just war theory?
In Christianity, a war that can be justified or is necessary under certain conditions
Developed by Thomas Aquinas in the 1200s
What conditions must be met for just war?
Must have a justified cause eg self defence
Must be declared and controlled by a proper authority eg government
Must be fought to oppose evil and uphold good
Should be a last resort after all peaceful options fail
Must be fought with the right amount of force to win, not use of excessive force
Good which is achieved by the war must be greater than the evil which led to the war
What is holy war?
Physical violence is necessary to defend religion
Either by claiming land for the religion, spreading faith to non-believers or defending the religious believers
What 3 elements do a Holy War have?
Achievement of a religious goal
Authorisation from a Religious Leader eg Pope
Promise for a spiritual reward for those who take part eg going to heaven

Help rehabilitate former child soldiers by giving them education, counselling and support
Attempt to bring together warring groups to find alternative ways of dealing with conflict
Provide refugees fleeing conflict with emergency aid, such as food, shelter and cooking equipment
