The first part of exodus
God sends 10 plagues against the Egyptians who had been enslaving Israelites
And performs miracles in order to help them cross the Red Sea
How is God shown as omnipotent in story of exodus?
He sends 10 plagues which defy the rules of nature = all powerful
How is god shown as just in the story of exodus?
The plagues are acts of divine justice against the worst oppressor in the Bible
The 10th plague kills the first born sons of Israelite families in retaliation for killing Israelite sons
How is god shown as all loving in the story of exodus?
He offers a substitute to paint the doorframes of the Israelite house with lamb blood to be protected from the plague
Parable of the Prodigal son
A father welcomes back and celebrates the return of his youngest son who had wasted all his money on ‘riotous living’
And still does not condemn him but still shows unconditional love
What does the parable of the Prodigal son show about God?
That he is the father who has unconditional love for all, the non righteous and righteous
He is benevolent and forgiving
How is God shown as all knowing?
“God is greater than our heart, and He knows everything.“ - John
How is God shown as omnipresent?
Bible:
“The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man”
Story of creation in Genesis
Day 1 and 2 = heavens, Earth (only water) light and sky
Day 3 = dry land and plants on Earth
Day 4 = sun, moon, planets, stars
Day 5 = sea and flying creatures
Day 6 = land creatures and humans
Day 7 = rest
What does God do to creation and what does it show?
He blesses us
Showing at this point humanity has an intimate relationship with God
What was the Holy spirits role in creation?
‘The spirit of god was hovering over the waters’
God was able to make the Earth through the Holy Spirit as the Holy Spirit is his ‘breath’ - featured in a Psalm
What was Jesus’s role in creation
Mentioned in John:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God…Through him all things were made.“
Before Jesus was incarnate he was ‘word’
Beliefs about the creation of humans
God created us in the image of God
We were made to rule the earth
We have to increase population
Every animal is food for us
Where does it say humans are made in the image of God?
‘So god created mankind in his own image. In his own image he created them’
What does it mean we are made in the image of God?
We have the same characteristics of God eg loving
But also we have the power to rule over the world like God rules over us
Dominion
Because we are made in the image of God,
We have the responsibility to use earth and it’s resources as we like
Arguments in favour of dominion
We are made in image of god = we can be rulers
Every thing that moves will be food for you = we can use earths resources
Steward ship
Humanity should take care of the Earth and look after it
Arguments in favour of stewardship
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
It’s god creation not ours
Interpretations of Creation story
Literal
Inspirational
Metaphorical
Literal interpretation of the creation story meaning
Because the Bible is the literal word of god
All the events that happened eg god created the world in 7 days, Adam and Eve created were real events that happened
Believed by creationists
Creationists
People who believe the events of the Bible happened exactly as stated
A literal interpretation
Inspirational interpretation of the creation story meaning
The Bible is inspired by God written by humans, who make errors in translation
So not everything is 100% accurate
Metaphorical interpretation of the creation story meaning
The events are simply metaphors/ symbols for what actually happened
Eg you can accept scientific ideas like the Big Bang is what created the skies/planets/ heaven etc which was caused by God
Believed by deists or evolutionary theists
Nicene creed
The Creed that states the relationship between God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit = the trinity
Showing that they are all God but also make up God
What does the Nicene creed say about God the father?
“We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth”
Therefore god is an all powerful creator
What does the Nicene creed say about god the son?
“We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the begotten of God the Father, the Only-begotten, that is of the substance of the Father.”
Therefore Jesus was incarnated from God but always existed as the word
What does the Nicene creed say about the Holy Spirit?
”The giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son… who has spoken through the prophets”
Therefore the Holy Spirit is the human connection with God and how he is omnipresent
It enables us to live a righteous life
jesus as a messiah meaning
When Adam and Eve ate the apple/sinned they introduced evil into the world
And a saviour/king was promised by Abraham to defeat evil but left us
Jesus was that king but he will return again to finally defeat evil
Definition of messiah
A leader that will be the saviour of a group of people
The life of Jesus: The word
Prior to his incarnation Jesus was with God as ‘The Word’ stated in John.
What does John tell us about Jesus as the word?
Both God the father and son (Jesus) was present at creation
‘He is light of the world in darkness’ = he is the messiah
God gave humans grace by sending Jesus
Was made incarnate and lived amongst humans
Quote from John which shows Jesus was present at creation
‘The word was with god and the word was God. He was with God in the beginning’
Quote from John that shows Jesus was the goodness/ perfect in the world (evil)
In him was life and that life was the light of all mankind in the darkness
Quote showing God sent Jesus to help humanity defeat evil as unmerited mercy (Messiah) in John
‘Who came from the father, full of Grace’
Grace = unmerited mercy
Quote showing Jesus became incarnate in John
‘The word became flesh and made his dwelling among us’
