wall of heart, chambers and valves Flashcards
What are the the layers of the heart?
Epicardium
myocardium
Endocardium
What is the epicardium?
Outer layer
Visceral pericardium
What is the myocardium and its function?
middle layer
Cardiac muscle(thickest layer)
Pumps blood out of the heart chambers
What is the endocardium and its function?
Inner layer
Connective tissue and epithelial major vessels joining into the heart contains Purkinjean fibres
What separates the atrium and ventricle on both sides?
Septum
What does the atrioventricular value do?
Ensure one way flow of blood from atria to ventricle
What is the right AV (tricuspid) and left AV(bicuspid/mitral) have?
cusps which chordae tendineae attach
What does chordae tendineae do?
Attach to papillary muscles in inner wall of the heart
These muscles contract during ventricular contraction-Prevent backflow of blood the AV value
What does the superior and inferior vena cava do?
bring blood back from systemic circuit to the RA
What does the coronary sinus do?
drains blood from the myocardium into RA
Why does the RV have thinner walls than LV?
It only pumps blood as far as the lungs, LV pumps blood to the whole body
What does each side of that heart have between the ventricles?
semi lunar value
What do the pulmonary artery and aorta do?
Prevents backflow of blood into ventricles
What are the four valvues
Tricuspid valve
Pulmonary valve
Mitral/ bicuspid valve
Aortic valve
What does the Tricuspid valve do?
Opening between RA and RV- prevents backflow to RA
