Blood vessels Flashcards
What do blood vessels do?
Transport blood around the body
List all 5 blood vessels
Arteries arterioles Capillaries venules veins
Describe structure of capillaries
Thin layers single cell caps between cells surrounded by tissue fluid only have epithelial layers
Describe structure of artery
Thick walls
small lumen
elastic vessels
epithelial smooth -prevents blood clots
Describe structure of veins
Less muscular walls
large lumen
have valves- help blood flow back to heart
What do capillaries do?
Exchange of gases nutrients, metabolic waste occurs between capillaries and tissue fluid via diffusion, filtration and osmosis
What does the blood entering the capillaries have?
High concentration of O2 and nutrients- diffuse from capillaries into the tissues
Why do plasma protein not enter the capillaries
too large in size remain in blood
Where do CO2 and metabolic waste diffuse from to?
From tissue fluid into the capillaries
What does the direction of diffusion depend on?
Concentration gradient
What does hydrostatic pressure from the pumping action of the heart generate?
Force of filtration of substances through walls of the capillaries
