Who is WADA
The World Anti-Doping authority
They were established in 1999 after 1998 Tour De France and commenced in 2003.
The purpose of the WADA code
- protect an athletes fundamental right to participate in in doping free sport and thus promote health, fairness and equality for athletes
- to ensure harmonised, coordinated and effective anti doping programs at the national and international level with regard to the detection, deterrence and prevention of doping
Violations of the WADA code (#8)
- Presence of prohibited sub. Or method in athletes sample
- Use of prohibited substance or method
- Refusing to submit a sample
- Failure to file whereabouts and missed tests
- Tampering or attempted tampering with doping control process
- Possessing prohibited substance or method
- Trafficking or attempted trafficking of prohibited substance or method
- Administering or attempting to administer a prohibited substance or method to an athlete.
How does WADA aid the acceptance, compliance and implementation of their code??
- ADAMS
- Collaborate with govt. and sports movements to make sure laws are in place to prevent doping and to track the support and supply of illegal substances
- Release an annual report with prohibited substances
- continuously updating their technology for the tracking of illegal substances in testing

Australian Sports Anti Doping Authority
Established in 2006
Coordinates and regulates anti-doping programs
What are the three categories that a substance or method must fulfil to be prohibited?
For a substance or method to be prohibited by WADA or ASADA must fulfil 2 of the 3 categories:
- Has the potential to enhance or enhances an athletes sporting performances
- Actual or potential health risk to the athlete
- Violates the spirit of the sport
What is ADAM’s
ADAMS (Anti-Doping Administration Management System)
Purpose: assist stakeholders with complying to WADA code
1. Athlete whereabouts
2. Information clearing house (where all data stored)
3. Doping control planning (plan/control/order tests and manage test results)
4. TUE (online request for therapeutic use)
What is ASADA’s Purpose
Purpose is the detection, deterrence and enforcement of doping controls
o Detection: identify doping violations
o Deterrence: educate athletes on the risks and consequences of using prohibited substances and methods
o Enforcement: managing cases where individuals have been found guilty of violations, presenting case to independent tribunals
