A

Determine the presence, severity, and type of aphasia. Measures level to provide baseline and determine strengths and weaknesses to guide treatment.

Short interview with conversation questions and then do a picture description task- you score for information content and fluency, grammatical competence and paraphasias (10 point scale).

What subtests make up the Auditory Verbal Comprehension section

A

Yes/no questions
Auditory word recognition
Sequential commands

Can answer y/n with other modalities (head nod, blink, etc.). Broca’s do better than Wernicke’s on Auditory word rec because they do not need to speak (can move their head toward item). Limb apraxia will result in lower score on sequential commands.

A

Repeat with words, phrases, and sentences of increasing length and complexity- can rate verbal apraxia in this section, as well as phonemic subs, stuttering, repetition, segmentation, etc.

What subtests make up the Naming and Word finding section?

A

Object naming
Word fluency
Sentence completion
Responsive speech

Object naming uses cues from tactile-phonemic-semantic (reduces score from 3-1). Word fluency is name as many animals as you can in one minute. Responsive speech is responding to five easy questions (e.g., “What do you write with?”).

A

Tasks to measure praxis by testing upper limb (salute), facial (close your eyes), instrumental (pretend to use a key), and complex (pretend to play the piano) movements.
