Poor comprehender Flashcards
Signs and symptoms
Poor comprehension
Good decoding skills
no problems in phonological processing- numerous other deficits in semantics, syntax, working memory, and higher level language processing
watching a poor comprehender would look like:
fluent (as opposed to dyslexic child)
story is off (got some aspects but was confused- right nouns but no actual story that happened- made sense though)
No pause or prosody to tell story
Assessment?
PAT-2
TNL
USP, FD, Reading on CELF-5
Results?
good PA skills
Poor usp, fd, reading subtest and TNL on comp questions
Treatment?
Story grammar mapping- (visual aids and story grammar to help with comp/retell)
Morphological awareness- use word knowledge to understand meaning- teach in depth meaning of words… more than definitions, teach in context, semantic features, word parts… multiple exposures to words (teach/discuss/learn each word)
Goals?
Graphic organizer to retell story with story grammar components
EET to describe features of nouns
