W9/L7: Lung disease Flashcards
What are some examples of obstructive lung diseases?
Asthma
COPD
Bronchiectasis
What are some examples of restrictive lung disease?
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Pneumoconiosis
Sarciodosis
Honey-comb lung
Define asthma
Increases airway responsiveness to various stimuli leading to episodic bronchoconstriction which is at least partially reversible.
What do you see in the serum of people with atopic asthma?
Increased serum IgE
What are the short-term complications of asthma?
Death
Atelectasis
Spontaneous pneumothorax
What are some long-term complications of asthma?
Airway remodelling
Chronic hypoxia -> pulmonary hypertension -> cor pulmonale
Define atelectasis
Collapse of the lung
Define emphysema
Abnormal, permanent enlargement of air spaces distal to the terminal bronchiole
What is the (broad) cause of emphysema?
Destruction of the alveolar wall without fibrosis
What are some complications of emphysema?
Pneumothorax
Hypoxia -> pulmonay hypertension -> cor pulmonale
Define chronic bronchitis:
A clinical definition: a persistent cough productive of sputum for at least 3/12 in 2 consecutive years, without any other cause
