W5- L-Spine Radiologic Evaluation Flashcards
What are some incidental findings in the L-Spine?
- Disc protrusion
- Spondylosis
- Spondylolisthesis
___________ has a high prevalence rate in asymptomatic populations at the L-Spine. (20-30%)
Disc protrusion
___________ is a pars defect reported in asymptomatic (7-10%) vs symptomatic (9%) populations.
Spondylosis
What is the measure of anterior slippage needed in order for spondylolysthesis to be classified as clinical instability?
3-4mm
What is a lumbar rib?
An accessory rib which inserts beyond the thorax at the transverse process of the first lumbar vertebra.
What is the bamboo sign and what is it indicative of?
Advanced case of ankylosing spondylitis, in which there is a complete fusion of the bones of the spine, turning the spinal column into one long bone, resembling a bamboo stalk.
What is DISH? What ages is it present?
DISH (Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis) is bony hardening of ligaments where they attach to bone. Present in older adults >40.
***Ankylosing spondylitis, just later in life.
What is a Schmorl’s node?
Herniation or an extrusion of the intervertebral disc nuclear material through the vertebral body endplate, with displacement of this material into the adjacent vertebral body
What is the collar on a scotty dog indicative of?
pars defect (Fx)
Bulging disc involves what percentage of the circumference?
Bulging Disc = 50-100%
- Broad-based herniation = ___ degrees
- Focal-based herniation = ___ degrees
- Broad-based herniation = 90-180 degrees
- Focal-based herniation = <90 degrees
What are the locations of herniations in the axial plane/zones? (5)
- Central
- Subarticular
- Foraminal
- Extra-foraminal
- Anterior
What are the locations of herniations in the sagittal plane/levels? (4)
- Suprapedicular
- Pedicle level
- Intrapedicular
- Disk level
