W4 Extending Theory of Planned Behaviour Flashcards
Theory of planned behaviour
suggests that subjective norms, attitudes (affective, cognitive) and perceived behavioral control influence’s people’s decisions about how to behave.
Sufficiency assumption
that the constructs and relationships included in the TPB are sufficient for explaining people’s intentions and behaviors.
Icek Ajzen (1991)
the theory of planned behavior is, in principle, open to the inclusion of additional predictors if it can be shown that they capture a significant proportion of the variance in intention or behavior after the theory’s current variables have been taken into account.
Anticipated regret
the various worries that beset a decision maker before any lsses materialize” Janis and Mann (1977) How could you expect to feel having had sew with a new or casual partner if you had not used a condom? (no worried-worried, no regret-regret, relaxed-tense) Richard et al.1988.
Descriptive norms
contrast with the concept of subjective norms, which is an injunctive norm, reflecting what other’s think (not what they actually do)
Moral norms
= An individual’s beliefs about the moral correctness or incorrectness of performing a behavior. Ajzen (1991); Sparks (1994)
= “Personal feelings of responsibility to perform, or refuse to perform, a certain behaviour”. Ajzen (1991, p. 199)
Self identity
‘Salient and enduring aspects of one’s self-perception’ = Rise et al. (2010, p. 1087)
Limite to Theory of Planned Behavior
There is evidence that, at least in some contexts and with respect to some behaviours, additional variables may predict intentions and/or behaviour over and above those specified by the TPB. (anticipated regret, descritpive and moral norms and self-identity.
Social cognition models to understanding help seeking behavior
often a delay btw individuals first awareness of a sign.symptom and them seeking help
TplannedB + delayed help-seeking = Psychological help scale
attitude = psychological openess, subjective norm = indifference to stigma, percieved behavioral control = help seeking propensity. Intention t oseek professional help
Theory of planned behaviour = subjective norm
My family would encourage/discourage me to go to the doctor for a symptom of breast cancer.
Theory of planned behavior = Perceived behavior control
There is nothing I could do to make sure that I got help for a breast-cancer symptom.
Illness perceptions
Identity, cause, timeline, cure/control, consequences.
