What does the “soul” mean for Plato?
The mind; consciousness, awareness.
Why does Plato believe that there are 3 parts of the soul?
Because he believes it’s the only way to explain conflicting feelings.
What does the appetitive part of the soul represent?
The part that desires
What does the spirited part of the soul represent?
Strong emotional feelings. Reactions to injustice, competitiveness, being driven
What does the rational part of the soul represent?
The part that controls the spirited and the appetitive parts of the soul.
According to Plato, how do we learn how to use the rational part of the soul more?
We need to engage in contemplation. Practice philosophy; think, ask questions, reflect.
