Q

Why does Dostoevsky believe that the free will defense does not hold up?

A
  • a good God couldn’t use free will as a justification for evil
  • fwd presents evil as punishments, as if the evil is deserved
  • Dostoevsky points out that this doesn’t work in a lot of cases, especially in children that are innocent
  • there are evils that go unpunished, where no one learns from it, such as an unsolved murder
  • there are too many seemingly pointless evils
  • a good God would not want people to be unsure of a purpose or hope when going through suffering

Q

Why does Dostoevsky believe that God shouldn’t give humans freedom if the possibility of evil exists?

A

A good God would recognize that the price of evil is not worth complete freedom. God should rather not create humans at all if horrible evils are present.
