W2 What is pharmaceutics? Flashcards
What is the definition of pharmaceutics?
Pharmaceutics describes the conversion of a drug to a medicine
Different names for “drug”
Active ingredient
Medicinal agent
Pharmacological agent
Active principal
Therapeutic
Active pharmaceutical ingredient (API)
Different names for “medicines”
Dosage form
Formulation
Preparation
Medicinal product
Pharmaceutical product
What are excipients?
Inactive ingredients
What is the definition of biopharmaceutics?
Biopharmaceutics: study of how the physicochemical
properties of the drug & medicine combine with
physiological aspects of the delivery route to determine rate and extent of absorption
What is definition of the formulation of medicines?
Act of designing and producing a medicine from first principles
Process of formulation of medicines and the final medicine (or dosage form) depends on many factors including:
– Physicochemical properties of the drug
– Biopharmaceutics
– Disease factors
– Patient acceptability
What is Preformulation?
What needs to be understood during this period?
-Everything that needs to happen first
with a new drug candidate
-Drug: solubility, melting point, pKa, log P etc.
When is small scale manufacturing required?
when developing new formulations
when no commercial product is available: specials manufacture or compounding
Why are microorganisms dangerous in pharmaceutics?
-Microorganisms can cause diseases and they also have the capacity to spoil medicines
-Contaminated medicines can be lethal
-The number of microorganisms acceptable in a medicine depends upon the type of dosage form, e.g. tablets vs injections
