W2 - Epithelium (lecture) Flashcards
Where can you find epithelial tissue?
Lines all body surfaces, cavities and tubes
What processes are epithelial tissues involved in?
Selective diffusion, absorption, secretion and protection
What do cytokeratin intermediate filaments provide and where?
Architectural support in epithelial tissues
Why is ET dependent on nutrients and oxygen from connective tissue?
Basement membrane does not contain blood vessels
Why are epithelial cells polarised?
One side is facing the BM and one facing the surface
What two functions can simple columnar epithelium perform?
Absorption and secretion
What is the name of epithelia with one cell layer and epithelia that is multilayered?
Simple (1), stratified (+1)
What may pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium be called?
Respiratory epithelium
What is stratified epithelium poorly suited to and why?
Absorption and secretion due to thickness
Give an example on the body where keratin is thicker and thinner in stratified squamous epithelium
Sole of foot - thick (keratin can build up when shoes rub frequently), forearm - thin
What is another name for transitional epithelium?
Urothelium
Where do cilia project from on epithelial cells?
Luminal surface
What are microvilli specialised for and how? Therefore where are they found?
Absorption because they increase SA by x30 fold, lining of SI
What are goblet cells and where are they found?
Modified columnar epithelial cells that synthesis and produce mucus, scattered amongst simple in GI and resp tract
What colour do goblet cells stain using PAS staining?
Bright pink
