12
Q

What are the stages of the stress response?

A
  1. ALARM
    - flight/fight/freeze, stress hormones are released by the pituitary gland ( adrenocorticotropic hormone)
    - the reaction ends when the stimulus ends
  2. RESISTANCE
    - individual begins to cope w the stress, physiological changes return back to normal, desesitization can occur overtime ( stress can still be there though you will not have a response to it)
  3. EXHAUSTION
    - prolonged exposure–>hard to adapt+ reset
    - imuunosupression–>compromise ( sick easily), chronic conditions can occur

Q

Physical interactions ex:?

A

17
Q

how can you manage your stress when on a call?

A

controlled breathing techniques and refame thoughts

18
Q

how does shift work affect the body?

A
  • sleep deprivation, make existing disorders worse, disrupt family/social life, circadian rhythms
  • sleep, wake , digestion, hormone secretion, body temp, HR, Bp, etc
  • work performance, motivation, sleep patterns, health
19
Q

mtypes?

A

morning people- faster circadian rhythms

20
Q

E types?

A

night owls

21
Q

some pros of shift work?

A
  • more time off, longer breaks,
22
Q

critical incidents:

A

events inducing stress that overwhelms our usual coping mechanisms
- can have effects on rescuers–> psycho stress & ability to cope

23
Q

common personality traits of a rescuer?

A

detail -orientated, deicated, ppl pleaser, (all/none) thinkers

24
Q

CISM?

A

critical Incident Stress Management
- structured interventions a performed by teams of trained mental health workers. originally developed for military use.

25
Q

steps of CISM?

A

1.simplicity: simple responses during the crisis
2. breviy(short contacts for a few mins)
3. Innovation: crisis intervention workers=creative to manage unique emotions
4.pragmatism: practice suggestions
5. proximity: successful interventions ( in comfort zone)
6.immediacy: crisis=immediate intervention–>positive outcomes
7.expectancy: the crisis worker makes the expectations for the positive outcomes

26
Q

defusing?

A

occur within 12-24 hrs following the event, only last 20-60mins, involve smaller groups of ppl ( 6-8 ppl)

27
Q

debrefing?

A

24-72 hours following the event, lasts 2-43 hours long, involve bigger groups of ppl from different areas ( police+fire+paramedics), formal event.
Goals: reduce the stress of the event, encourage feelings, rid the fallacy of abnormality, help ppl recover

28
Q

hat are the & steps of debrefing?

A

1.intro: CSIM team intro their members/explains the process
2.fact; describe the event from recollection,
3.thought;paticipants describe their thoughts
4.reaction: most traumatic part, anyone speaks
5.symptom: any s/s you are feeling
6.teaching:stress techniques
7.re-entry: closure given,

29
Q

CISM components:

A

pre-incident stress training, on scence report, advice, initial discussion, defusing, demobilizing prn, follow-up services, family education, individual consultations.

30
Q

rules of CISM:

A

confidentiality, voluntary participation, no breaks, everyone stays till the meeting is over, respecting other experiences

31
Q

SAFER-R

A

revised odel of individual crisis intervention
- stabalize, acknowledge crisis, facilitate understanding, recovery/refferal
