VSOHA APPK unit 1 Flashcards
Fascia
Is the tough, pliable connective tissue that covers, divides and supports all structures of the body
Anatomy
The science of structure and the relationship among these structures
Pathology
The science of the structural changes caused by disease
Physiology
The science of functions (how the body parts work)
Kinesiology
The study of how the body moves
Sagittal
Divides the body into left and right halves
Frontal or Coronal
Divides the body into front and back
Transverse
Divides the body into upper and lower portions
Long bone
Longer than it is wide
Short bone
Sometimes called ‘cuboid’ cube shaped
Flat bone
Flat bones that protect the vital organs
Irregular bone
Any bone that doesn’t fit into the other categories
Axial skeleton
Is the skeletons center and includes the cranium, vertebral column, ribs, sternum. (Cannot live without)
Appendicular
Is the part of the skeleton composed of arms and legs, including the pelvis. (Can live without)
Excitability
The ability to receive and respond to stimuli
Contractility
The ability for muscles to contract
Extensibility
The ability to stretch beyond its normal resting length
Elasticity
The ability to return to its normal resting length, shape and size
Skeletal muscle
Found in skeletal muscles. Voluntary and striated.
Smooth muscle
Found in internal organs and blood vessels. Involuntary and non-striated.
Cardiac muscle
Found in the heart. Involuntary and striated.
Tendons
Attach muscle to bone
Ligaments
Attach bone to bone

Condition or state of…
Atoms
The smallest unit of matter
Molecules
Combine to make our cells
Cells
The basic unit of structure and functions
Tissues
Cells combine to form tissues
Epithelial tissues
Covers, lines and protects
Connective tissues
most abundant
Nervous
Sensitive to stimuli. Converts nerve impulses
Organs
Structures that are composed of two or more types of tissue
Systems
A group of related functions with a common function
Organisms
All systems of the body are interrelated and function together making an organism = us
4 cavities
Cranial cavity
Thoracic cavity
Abdominal cavity
Pelvic cavity
Homeostasis
The condition of equilibrium
4 steps to assessment
Ask questions
Visual
Palpate
Take notes
Indicated
Safe to do body work
Contraindicated
A symptom or condition that makes a particular treatment inadvisable because it may be harmful
General
When a condition affects the whole body
Locally
When a condition affects a specific region or body part
Caution
Pathologies that may be treated with caution
