Lymphatic and immune systems Flashcards
Components of the lymph system:
Lymph and lymph vessels
Lymph
-After interstitial fluid passes into lymph vessels its called ‘lymph’
-Lymph is mostly water, but it contains a higher volume metabolic waste
-Lymphocytes (WBC)
Lymph capillaries
Have openings with anchor filaments that allow fluid to enter the lymph system
Primary lymph vessels
-Have valves that only allow lymph to flow one way
-Have lymph nodes located at intervals along the way
Lymph vessels
-Right lymphatic duct
-The thoracic duct
Cisterna chyli
Its a collecting well for the lymph from the lower extremities
Lymph nodes
-Contain specialized immune cells to fight foreign invaders: Lymphocytes
-B cells, T cells, Macrophages
Lymphocytes
-B cells produced and mature in the red bone marrow
-T cells produced in the red bone marrow and mature in the thymus
Functions of the lymph
-Returns fluid and protein to the blood
-Absorbs and transports fats as well as lipid-soluble vitamins from the digestive tract
-Immunity responses via specialized lymphocyte activity
Functions of the immune system
Protects and defends the body from foreign substances
Components of immune system
-Lymphocytes
B cells and T cells
Specific or adaptive immune responses
Acquired over time through exposure to specific pathologies
