Q

Libet’s experiment

A

There is so much stimulation and arousal that precedes the brain, that the brain prepares free will before a person is aware of the intention to respond in a particular way. Experience of free will precedes the action, but ultimately also a consequence of neural processes. So  free will is also determined by our brain.

Q

Daniel Wegner

A

Free will is an illusion. The brain already determines the action, but consciousness also determines the causality between thought and an action on an unconscious level. 3 principles:
1. priority,
2. consistency and
3. exclusivity.
So free will only takes place after an action has been performed, which is determined on an unconscious level.

A

Dennett: free will and determinism can be made compatible. Free will does not exist, but free willcan be explained from deterministic reality  succession of outcomes that have a causal relationship, chance plays no role. Free will is a

GlobalWorkspaceTheory (Baars)

A

The GWT can becompared to atheater of mind,in whichconscious
contents resemble a bright spot on the stage of immediate memory, selected by a spotlight of attention under executive guidance. Only the bright spot is conscious; the rest of the theater is dark and unconscious (see image)
